On one of the many visits to the Barossa Valley from his home in Melbourne, Col was given the opportunity of working a vintage and it was during his stay that a good friend told him about a small vineyard up for sale in Flaxmans Valley. The established vineyard consisted of Shiraz, Riesling and Semillon which were planted in 1929 and just happen to be some of Col's favourite varieties. Col put an offer in on the property and then thought he had better tell his wife. Luckily there was a two week cooling off period and also Fi fell in love with the property too. The move to the Barossa was made in July 2004.
The first vintage of 'The Stranger' was made in 2004 with just one barrel being produced - the wine was given the name 'The Stranger' as the grapes were sourced from a vineyard that is not our own. The Shiraz, Riesling and Semillon were first made under the Flaxman Label in 2005. Grenache, Mataro, GMS and Cabernet have since been added to the line-up. All the grapes are dry grown and hand picked with the wines being made off-site by Colin.
2017 will see a Cellar Door open up on the property with private lunches available for small groups of up to 12 people. Follow us on Facebook to find out the most up to date news on what is happening.
